Weird Thanksgiving Traditions!

Just one peek into a big box store like Target or Wal-Mart and there is no denying it- the holidays are coming. Red and green decorations are everywhere, Christmas music is playing on the loudspeaker, and advertisements for stocking stuffers abound. But what about Thanksgiving? This often overlooked holiday deserves some love! Here are some of the stranger holiday traditions around the U.S.:

  1. Frozen Turkey Bowling

At the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse, students participate in Frozen Turkey Bowling. Bowlers throw a frozen, oiled turkey down a grocery store aisle for charity. Let’s just hope they are washing their hands after that!

 

2.  The President Pardons a Turkey

Ever since 1947, a strange presidential tradition has occurred at Thanksgiving.  President Harry S. Truman was the first president to pardon a turkey. The strange thing is that in some cases, the turkeys that were actually served at the White House!

3. Participating in a Turkey Trot

Thanksgiving is a day to be with family, remember why you are grateful, and well…EAT! It’s no surprise that the average American consumes thousands of calories on one day. To help combat this, many people opt to run a 5k Turkey Trot the morning of Thanksgiving to help offset those extra helpings of pecan pie and mashed potatoes and gravy. Some people even dress up as a turkey!

4. Ragamuffin Day!

In the early 1900’s it was tradition for children to dress as hobos and go door to door and say, “Anything or Thanksgiving?” and were usually treated with a piece of candy.
